The Learning Tree

The Learning Tree is a program designed to encourage preschool children and their parents to use the library. Each time they visit the library, the child gets to spin the spinner and select an activity to take home and complete with the parent’s help. When the activity is completed, the child and parent return the activity to the library and receive a sticker on the child’s certificate. Once the certificate sticker spaces have been filled, the child receives a prize.

Activities for the Learning Tree are based on developing skills needed to prepare the child for school. They include learning colors, shapes, the alphabet, and numbers while manipulating craft materials. Some activities involve reading stories written by respected children’s book authors and books about specific topics. Other activities require the examination of texture or the categorization of objects.

Children may leave their projects to be displayed at the library or take them home. It is hoped that parents will continue doing similar activities with their preschoolers at home, once the Learning Tree certificate is completed.
